This was initially just going to be me telling you why you should go and pre-order this tape based on the pleasure of hearing the preview track, but I have now been very fortunate enough to listen to the entire thing (including the tracks exclusive to the physical cassette release). And now you have to believe me when I tell you to bust out a couple of quid on this beast.
Regular readers will know that we like Lovely Wife and have written about their live EP, Live & Contrived, that was released earlier this year. It was great to have the essence of their live performances captured, as in the studio their sound isn’t the easiest to re-create. Problem Rock has certainly tackled that problem head on with a Sledgesaw (Dead Rising reference right there).
I didn’t think any bands had identified with the “Screamo” genre since it became an embarrassing tag about a decade ago, but Dooie Mus are using it to describe themselves. Needless to say, I was immediately drawn in.
If you have read many of my reviews, you may be aware that I have sleep deprived nights, in which I tend to stick my earphones in and listen to something that I am listening to for review (that or Type O Negative). With the more experimental/art rock albums, they tend to suit that time of night. However, The Mortlake Bookclub have managed to create something that completely warps your head at 3am like a really bad trip, to the point that I jumped and threw my earphones on the floor. I love it!
When Qoheleth described their music as noise rock… Fuck me, I didn’t expect this.
Albums jump out at you for different reasons; some because they appear to hit so many of your sweet spots, others because they are slathered with bizarrely intriguing weirdness. By way of uncreative writing, you have probably guessed that this is very much the latter.
Well here are two firsts; The Cauteriser has reached yet another new country – Greece, and this is the latest/earliest that I have attempted to write up a review (currently 04:32 am). Let’s fucking do this!
Instrumental bands are another one of those areas of music that I find to be extremely hit or miss. I am fond of bands like Maybeshewill and That Fucking Tank, but when it comes to more established artists like Mogwai… well I like the music, but something about it doesn’t captivate me as much as it should. However, Closet Disco Queen are right up there in my opinion.
Enamel Animal; I like the name alone. 8/10 job done.
I have previously described bands as sounding like the true indie music of the 80s/early 90s, similar to many of the bands that I grew up listening to from the mother’s vinyl collection. Never before have I heard a band so true to those roots like Fret! are.
