I think we have a name for ourselves covering a lot of obscure, weirder and damn right abstract music this year. The new single from Scar Polish is certainly up there.

I’ll be honest, this is one of the most difficult reviews I’ve ever tried to start writing. Not so much because of its unique art rock approach, but more because of my conflicted level of interest throughout. I don’t like to start firing off negativity, especially for how much I actually do like Collider as a whole, but the first few tracks are attention demanding.
Not many bands whack out tracks over 10 minutes long that really get me going. And these proggy types of music, even the (in my opinion) better ones don’t usually get further listens from me post review. Ancestro may be a first here.
It is safe to say, we remain fond of Qoheleth’s debut effort, as they successfully ran away with a true noise rock sound and had fun with their selection of abstract pieces. This time around, they have channelled their creativity into one hell of a concept album. This is Black Kite Broadcasts.

This review was fuelled by intrigue. I was sent a tweet with nothing more than a link to this music video. I checked it out, the lovely human being that I am, and loved what I heard, so immediately gave it a re-tweet. Unfortunately, not being sent it as a proper request it slipped my mind, but here we are now. I couldn’t not share the love on this one.
Any regular readers (I know there aren’t any, but I can dream…) may recall there was a spat of Doom/Drone/Sludge/Stoner Rock bands that I was covering last Summer. Safe to say, they got a bit stale after a while, but when Slutty Clowns popped up in my inbox, I was all over that shit.
This was initially just going to be me telling you why you should go and pre-order this tape based on the pleasure of hearing the preview track, but I have now been very fortunate enough to listen to the entire thing (including the tracks exclusive to the physical cassette release). And now you have to believe me when I tell you to bust out a couple of quid on this beast.
Regular readers will know that we like Lovely Wife and have written about their live EP, Live & Contrived, that was released earlier this year. It was great to have the essence of their live performances captured, as in the studio their sound isn’t the easiest to re-create. Problem Rock has certainly tackled that problem head on with a Sledgesaw (Dead Rising reference right there).
I didn’t think any bands had identified with the “Screamo” genre since it became an embarrassing tag about a decade ago, but Dooie Mus are using it to describe themselves. Needless to say, I was immediately drawn in.
If you have read many of my reviews, you may be aware that I have sleep deprived nights, in which I tend to stick my earphones in and listen to something that I am listening to for review (that or Type O Negative). With the more experimental/art rock albums, they tend to suit that time of night. However, The Mortlake Bookclub have managed to create something that completely warps your head at 3am like a really bad trip, to the point that I jumped and threw my earphones on the floor. I love it!
